Summer holidays are the time for lazing around catching up on some reading. OutUK's Stevie Gardiner has been between the covers and come up with some recent books that make the perfect beach (or bedtime) reading.
The Lodger Drew Gummerson
Honza is a freelance writer who takes in straight guy Andy as a lodger to help pay the bills. Andy seems like your typical heterosexual male whilst his landlord is the complete opposite. However this is a story of misunderstandings with the always underlying question - will Andy end up in Honza's bed? This is a well observed piece of writing with a central relationship that develops in unexpected ways and with characters who are far from stereotypes. The relationship between Andy and his landlord's young nephew is particularly sensitively drawn. This is a well-constructed first novel from Drew Gummerson who writes with great style and will be particularly enjoyed by any gay man who's fallen for a breeder boy. Gay Men's Press £9.99

A Dangerous Thing Josh Lanyon
This is the second LA-based thriller featuring bookseller Adrien English and like the first moves at a cracking pace. Adrien arrives at the Pine Shadow Ranch (left to him by his grandmother) to find a corpse in the driveway. It's gone by the time the police arrive and of course they don't believe him. Things go from bad to worse when the cops discover the ranch has fields of cannabis plants and there's a whole host of suspicious strangers excavating in the hills above the farm. There's another murder, a haunted forest and a small town where nothing is quite as it seems. However it's the development of the relationship between Adrien and LAPD Detective Jake Riordan which adds real depth to what is also a highly entertaining mystery. Gay Men's Press £8.99

Out Of This World Jack Dickson
This is a new collection of 18 short stories which if you like your porno sleazy will definitely get your motor running. These stories are not for lovers of vanilla as orifices get plugged with things like the handbrakes of smashed up cars and by nebulous beings which we're never quite sure whether they're man or beast. There's no twinks here but plenty of downright dirty sex. Zipper Books £7.95

The Sacrifice Gordon Linton
Occult fantasies are not to everyone's taste, but Gordon Linton's first novel is an intelligently written book which is a real page-turner. Just like all the best spine-tinglers it's set in an English country village where schoolboy Greg Chailey is aware that it's not just his attraction for his classmates that is going to upset his world. Gay Men's Press £9.99

The Slave King Ben Elliott
Of all the genres of gay porn, the Greek or Roman slave-boy/gladiator fantasy provides the writer with so many erotic opportunities. Ben Elliot makes the most of then in his new book which is a follow-up to his successful Gladiator School. This too is a cut above the average which is not surprising as Ben Elliot is apparently a nom-de-plume for a respected ancient historian. Though there's a tremendous sense of place, it's written in a knowing style giving the whole book a campy feel which is rather entertaining in itself: "The tribune exhaled with pleasure as the boy's orifice blossomed in welcome, allowing the full length of his arching member to slide slickly home into the lad's vitals." A fun one-handed read. Zipper Books £7.95
