| Welcome to the Now Playing Reviews Database where
you can find our opinion of films which have had a cinema release in the UK.
Each of these movies are reviewed from a gay perspective, giving them
both an overall star rating plus our exclusive gay rating. The more stars out of a possible 10, the
better the film; similarly the more pink triangles, the greater the gay interest. A full list of
all our reviews appears below, and this week's current films are found on the Now Playing Main Page.
Most films are now available for rent on DVD and we recommend
ScreenSelect who operate an efficient online rental service by post with no late fees
and you can keep up to 3 DVDs for as long as you like.
If you'd like a film permanently in your DVD collection, then the best prices are
normally found at Amazon.

Bend It Like Beckham
Movie Rating:
Hilarious

The third feature from award winning Bhaji on the Beach’ writer/director
Gurinder Chadha. Eighteen year-old
Jess’s parents want her to be a nice, conventional Indian girl. But she just wants to
play football like her hero, David Beckham. For Jess (Parminder Nagra), that means kicking a ball around the
local park with the lads until she’s spotted by Jules, who invites her to join the local
women’s football team. The girls are the same age and they share the same dreams.

A real feelgood comedy that's more about what it takes for a girl to get what she
wants, rather than a clash between Asian traditions and modern British culture.
Gay Interest:
Some
Though both Beckhams wanted to appear in the film, their commitments didn't allow it
so David fans will have to make do with a lookalike. There's a lot of parallels with
the difficulties many gays and lesbians find in becoming accepted for what
they want and desire, and there's a coming out scene like no other. |
