| Welcome to the Now Playing Reviews Database where
you can find our opinion of films which have had a cinema release in the UK.
Each of these movies are reviewed from a gay perspective, giving them
both an overall star rating plus our exclusive gay rating. The more stars out of a possible 10, the
better the film; similarly the more pink triangles, the greater the gay interest. A full list of
all our reviews appears below, and this week's current films are found on the Now Playing Main Page.
Most films are now available for rent on DVD and we recommend
ScreenSelect who operate an efficient online rental service by post with no late fees
and you can keep up to 3 DVDs for as long as you like.
If you'd like a film permanently in your DVD collection, then the best prices are
normally found at Amazon.

Birthday Girl
Movie Rating:
Terrific Fun
She can act, sing, and dance, and now she speaks Russian and gives hand jobs.
Is there anything that Nicole Kidman cannot do?
|
|
She plays Russian mail-order bride Nadia, who doesn't speak English, as British bank teller John
(Ben Chaplin) soon discovers. Despite the language barrier, Nadia develops
unique communication skills by browsing through John's hidden porn magazines.
With the arrival of Nadia's cousins, Alexei (Mathieu Kassovitz) and Yuri
(Vincent Cassel), John's bliss fades fast when he learns that the con is on.

This odd blend of romantic comedy and crime caper doesn't always work, with some
clunky jokes and hardly surprising revelations. Wisely, director Jez Butterworth
keeps focused on the stereotype-breaking characters, not the goofy plot, and the
winning performances make this mindless film terrific fun to watch.
Gay Interest:
Ben Chaplin & Vincent Cassel
Kidman appears frequently in her birthday suit, showing off
her shapely form and the world's flattest tummy. The muscular Cassel
runs around with his shirt off most of the time. Ben Chaplin is interviewed on
video below.
