| Welcome to the Now Playing Reviews Database where
you can find our opinion of films which have had a cinema release in the UK.
Each of these movies are reviewed from a gay perspective, giving them
both an overall star rating plus our exclusive gay rating. The more stars out of a possible 10, the
better the film; similarly the more pink triangles, the greater the gay interest. A full list of
all our reviews appears below, and this week's current films are found on the Now Playing Main Page.
Most films are now available for rent on DVD and we recommend
ScreenSelect who operate an efficient online rental service by post with no late fees
and you can keep up to 3 DVDs for as long as you like.

Kate & Leopold
Movie Rating:
Run-of-the-mill
|
|
Eccentric scientist Stuart (Liev Schreiber) transports his
great-great-grandfather Leopold (Hugh Jackman) from 1867 New York to
contemporary Manhattan. When Stuart is hospitalized after falling down
an elevator shaft, Leopold spends quality time with Stuart's ex-girlfriend
Kate (Meg Ryan), an ad-agency executive highly disillusioned by modern men.

While most romantic comedies require some suspension of disbelief, this movie
needs more than usual. Director James Mangold never develops Leopold's
culture shock between 19th-century courtesy and 21st-century manners, settling
for routine romance as dull as it is predictable. Ryan is on auto-pilot,
playing the same kind of role she was too old for ten years ago, while Jackman
lends a lot more class than this material merits. This run-of-the-mill movie
has a terminal case of the cutes.
Gay Interest:
Passing
A number of people assume that Leopold is gay, because they
cannot image that anyone with such impeccable manners and exquisite
taste could be straight. Jackman, who came to fame as outcast Wolverine in
X-Men, looks fantastic in his tight jodhpurs, waistcoats, and riding boots,
and for some that's reason enough to see this film. |
