| Welcome to the Now Playing Reviews Database where
you can find our opinion of films which have had a cinema release in the UK.
Each of these movies are reviewed from a gay perspective, giving them
both an overall star rating plus our exclusive gay rating. The more stars out of a possible 10, the
better the film; similarly the more pink triangles, the greater the gay interest. A full list of
all our reviews appears below, and this week's current films are found on the Now Playing Main Page.
Most films are now available for rent on DVD and we recommend
ScreenSelect who operate an efficient online rental service by post with no late fees
and you can keep up to 3 DVDs for as long as you like.
If you'd like a film permanently in your DVD collection, then the best prices are
normally found at Amazon.

Spider-Man
Movie Rating:
A Stunner

The leotard-clad web slinger leaps off the pages of Marvel Comics and
onto the big screen in this candy-coloured, fast-paced adventure. On a high
school field trip to a research lab, student reporter Peter Parker (Tobey
Maguire) is bitten by a genetically altered spider. Soon after, he develops an
arachnid's strength and agility and decides to use his extraordinary powers
to fight crime.
Director Sam Raimi strikes the perfect balance between mock seriousness and sarcastic
camp, giving as much time to Spidey's sweet romance with Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst)
as to the furious battle with insane villain Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe). The film
is a stunner in all departments, and Maguire establishes himself as a superhero of an actor.

Gay Interest:
Loads
Gays can easily relate to Peter's status as a teen outsider, who feels different
and out-of-place among his peers. His initial transformation into Spider-Man is
like a wet dream, which ends hilariously when he shoots a load of sticky web out
of his wrist. Maguire, who played queer in Wonder Boys, looks great with
his newly buffed body in a skin-tight body suit. Peter's rival for Mary Jane's
affections is played by James Franco, who won a Golden Globe for his performance
as queer actor James Dean in a tv movie.
