| Welcome to the Now Playing Reviews Database where
you can find our opinion of films which have had a cinema release in the UK.
Each of these movies are reviewed from a gay perspective, giving them
both an overall star rating plus our exclusive gay rating. The more stars out of a possible 10, the
better the film; similarly the more pink triangles, the greater the gay interest. A full list of
all our reviews appears below, and this week's current films are found on the Now Playing Main Page.
Most films are now available for rent on DVD and we recommend
ScreenSelect who operate an efficient online rental service by post with no late fees
and you can keep up to 3 DVDs for as long as you like.
If you'd like a film permanently in your DVD collection, then the best prices are
normally found at Amazon.

Spirit
Movie Rating:
Dazzling Animation
Combining traditional hand-drawn imagery with 3-D computer enhancements,
Dreamworks' latest animated film tells the simple tale of a wild stallion's
attempts to remain free as human interlopers encroach upon the Old West.

The plot is a predictable pastiche of countless westerns, and the film's
politically correct environmental agenda is painfully forced. The one
innovation is the minimal dialogue, which is spoken only by a U.S. Cavalry
colonel (voiced by James Cromwell) and a Native American (Daniel Studi). The
filmmakers, though, don't stray too far from animated film convention - they
resort to unnecessary voice-over narration by Matt Damon and bland pop songs
by Bryan Adams.

It's only when the dazzling animation depicts gorgeous
landscapes, accompanied by Hans Zimmer's stirring music, that the film
achieves the cinematic poetry of a silent movie.
Gay Interest:

Damon played the sexually ambiguous title character in The Talented Mr. Ripley.
