| Welcome to the Now Playing Reviews Database where
you can find our opinion of films which have had a cinema release in the UK.
Each of these movies are reviewed from a gay perspective, giving them
both an overall star rating plus our exclusive gay rating. The more stars out of a possible 10, the
better the film; similarly the more pink triangles, the greater the gay interest. A full list of
all our reviews appears below, and this week's current films are found on the Now Playing Main Page.
Most films are now available for rent on DVD and we recommend
ScreenSelect who operate an efficient online rental service by post with no late fees
and you can keep up to 3 DVDs for as long as you like.
If you'd like a film permanently in your DVD collection, then the best prices are
normally found at Amazon.
This prequel to Patriot Games and Clear and Present
Danger gives the ageing movie series about CIA agent Jack Ryan a
youthful makeover, replacing Harrison Ford with the much younger Ben Affleck (interviewed below).

Affleck looks like a high school sophomore, but his casting is the least of this
techno-thriller's problems.
The convoluted plot involves neo-Nazis stealing a nuclear bomb and attempting to
start a war between the Americans and the Russians. Director Phil Alden Robinson can't build much suspense with
politicians (Morgan Freeman, James Cromwell) yelling at each other or
government geeks staring at computer screens.

The scattershot editing has Ryan
globe-hopping in just a matter of minutes, which would be impossible according
to the onscreen ticking clock. Like the neo-Nazis' planned Armageddon,
this movie is a total disaster.
Gay Interest:
Ben Affleck
Alan Bates plays the head Nazi as probably gay - surrounded
by effeminate-looking henchmen, he stares fondly at their backsides whenever
they exit a room. Affleck's character in Chasing Amy
dated a lesbian.
