Who can take methadone

Most adults aged 18 years and over, and occasionally younger people, can take methadone for heroin dependence.

Who may not be able to take methadone

Methadone may not be suitable for some people. To make sure it's safe for you, tell your doctor or prescriber before starting methadone treatment if you:

have ever had an allergic reaction to methadone or any other medicine
have a lung condition, or breathing difficulties
have ever abused or been dependent on alcohol, prescription medicines or illegal drugs
have a head injury or get bad headaches
have ulcerative colitis
have seizures or fits
have heart disease, heart rhythm problems (arrhythmia) or low blood pressure
have problems with your thyroid, adrenal glands, kidneys or liver
have myasthenia gravis (a rare condition that causes muscle weakness)
are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding
